The history of the Totness Inn Hotel

Henry Giles Snr. established the settlement of Totness in 1858, through the creation of xx allotments that ran from Saleyards Road through to Pentelows Road.

The settlement was named after the birthplace of Henry Giles Snr. wife . Henry also developed North Totness, continuing from Pentelows Road to Angas Valley Road; this being surveyed in 1869.

The Totness Inn Hotel was established by Thomas Drever LIDDLE on Allotments 19 and 20 that were purchased from Henry GILES in 1860 for XX pounds. LIDDLE took out a loan from XXXX to construct a single storey hotel.

In 1866 then owner of the hotel John and Catherine SCHOFIELD purchased Allotment XX which sits opposite the hotel on the XXX side of Melrose Street and now serves as a parking area for the hotel.

Totness did not technically change its name to Mount Pleasant. Instead, the modern-day township of Mount Pleasant was formed through the gradual physical merging of three originally separate and adjacent settlements: Mount Pleasant (surveyed in 1856), Totness (surveyed in 1858), and Hendryton (surveyed in 1865).

Over time, these three areas blended into a single cohesive town, with the Totness section (located on the eastern side) forming the main part of the modern township. The District Council of Mount Pleasant was proclaimed in 1935.
